Glyphs Of Sorrow

The short experimental film I worked on earlier this year was completed in May. I never really had the opportunity to upload it on here, so I figured I'd do it like a few days before the new year.

The title is Glyphs Of Sorrow and it premiered on the CSUF PMC Film Festival this year. I wanted to create something outside my comfort zone and tried to do something a little creepy I guess. I also wanted an excuse to work practice After Effects as well, so this was a perfect way to do so. I'm not going to re-upload images from earlier blog posts, but I will add tags to those posts so that if you click on the keyword at the bottom you can see some of my work-in-progress stuff.

My characters Nail, Jason, and Kacky make their cameo appearances in the glyphs. In the film, I only used 18 out of 20 glyphs: the first one would be the guy with 3 hairs (row 4 column 1) which was a character concept for a different film idea I wanted to do but had no time to; and the second one I just kinda forgot to use (row 2 column 4).
The above is an instructional image I sent out to people to help me come up with designs.

I got the reaction I wanted at the film festival and gave out bottle cap pins. Some days later I did a painting of the final scene of the film:
Looking back, I wished I could have asked some people to help me with my movie. I only had a month to really animate anything and I was pretty much a one man team. I had to cut out a lot of my ideas in order to meet the deadline, so that was a bummer. Regardless, I'd like to thank Katie Hardash, Rachel "Sailor Ember Phantom" Clark, and Marcus Lazore for all your help and support!

Floating Orb

Haven't drawn anything in 12 days and so I forced myself to paint. So here's a silly thing.

Five Years Of Nail

A couple hours too late, but whatever. Nail turned 5 yesterday, November 28th! Would've probably finished earlier, but because of the holiday my schedule had been compromised. Oh well! I was able to find old sketchbooks to help me with this little tribute. I'm so glad I had dated some of those old pages too.
I actually didn't want to submit the above on the 29th, so I used the sketch below as a placeholder image on a different site while I finished.
I have to admit... looking at all those old drawings in those sketchbooks did bring me back to some good times.

Some Quick Gestures

Been drawing some gestures and figure studies on my own when I can't sleep. These are done with a drawing tablet.

Haven't really had fun practicing in a while.

That hand is a film concept of mine that I may expand on sometime in the future.

Some Inked Trees

My illustration teacher inked a tree for Inktober 2013 and I wanted to do it too! Thanks Cliff!
This little experiment was actually kinda fun.

Game Jam: Remote Action

Participated in this year's Game Jam presented by both VGDC & PMC (Video Game Design Club & the Pencil Mileage Club) at CSUF. The event is basically a 3-day marathon to complete a game by the end of the weekend. The programmers program the game while the artists make the art. Go figure.

Our group's game was called Remote Action and takes place in the 80s. The characters are the Kid, the Hero, and Alien Robots. The Kid has a TV remote that can rewind, pause, and fast-forward time. The Hero (which I've labeled "Cop" on the production sheets) is a police officer who aids the Kid by killing off the Alien Robots (labeled "Robots"on production sheets). There is probably a lot more to the story, but that's up to the lead programmer of the project.

Here are my character designs and prop designs.

I also designed symbols for the interface, but didn't bother uploading it here because of the shear simplicity of the designs. I was told to design a splash page so I came up with this:

It was pretty fun. When the game is complete, I'll definitely drop a link.

Dog Sketches 1

Some dog sketches, yo.
Haven't drawn animals since 2011. I'm hoping the anatomy isn't too bad. Forgive me, Tina!

Happy Rocko Day 2013

I feel kinda weird submitting fan art on here, but I figure it's all good.
Every year I draw something for Rocko Day. Ended up putting a lot of effort into this year's because of the 20 year anniversary. I intended to draw more characters, but ran out of time. I also outlined and rejected 3 characters because they were bugs, thus being too small for the final piece:

Here's a sketch of Spunky using Vilppu's drawing technique:
Gonna try to sketch more with that. Have a dangerous day!

Bunch Of Thumbnails 2

More thumbnails I'm running through Jay for our collaboration. Here are concepts for a skeleton mountain, mushroom world, and a treetop concept too I think (will have to ask about that one).

This is pretty fun. Maybe I could board a short scene of some sort to make these exercises relevant for my storyboard portfolio. I'm hoping I can draw more cartoons too.

Bunch Of Thumbnails 1

Hey guys! Sorry for not posting in June. Here's a bunch of thumbnails I did for a collaboration with my friend Jay N. We still don't know what we're doing, but hopefully these thumbs will help get something started!

Will try to post more soon!

After Effects Blob Cycle

Here's an After Effects test I did to try to understand compositions and such:

Been working on my short "film" the last month. I'll definitely upload the final product on here when I'm done!

And with that said... May the Fourth be with you!

Ominous Face Lip Sync Test

Tested out my mouths by shamelessly using the audio from a boxed meal commercial and lip syncing over them. Learned that I was missing a proper "R" mouth, so I quickly made one.

And then I distorted the audio and added a simple effect.

It's alright for a test, yo!

Ominous Face Mouth Chart

Done with my mouth chart!

It took forever and it may not be perfect, but it's an experiment after all. Pretty excited!

Oh Zut! Poisson d'Avril 2013

Salut mes amis! Aujourd'hui est Poisson d'Avril!

In France, the French would tape paper fish to the backs of their victims as a prank. When they discover the fish, the pranker would exclaim, "Poisson d'Avril!" or "April Fish!"

Happy April Fools Day 2013!

Ominous Face Test

Painted some faces.

I want to try to morph them into each other when I paint the mouths. I'm hoping to make a mouth chart and animate the face to speech. Hopefully it works!

Just A Lit Candle

Just painted a candle so I could try to animate it somehowwwwwww.

Thank you Mr-Stock for the reference photo!
